Chinese Cement Still Coming to Costa Rica

The company Sinocem has announced it will once again import cement from China to supply the local market at a lower cost than is offered by traditional suppliers.

Amid the controversy generated by changes in the rules for marketing cement, the company Sinocem has announced that the first Chinese import and sale of cement in the country generated good results, and that it will be importing more. The company says that the first batch was sold in December 2014 at a price 20% lower than the competition.

Juan Carlos Bolanos, president of JCB, said in an article on Nacion.com that in December , "... the average price of a sack of 50 kilos was $13 (¢7,000)."

"The clashes over the distribution of Chinese cement remain, as the Consumers Association of Costa Rica has filed a complaint with the MEIC, for alleged irregularities in the labeling. The complaint states that on the packaging of the product the expiry date 45 days and a separate sticker it states that the validity period is six months. "
