China and Costa Rica to begin FTA negotiations

Presidents Hu Jintao and Oscar Arias signed 11 agreements for cooperation in trade, economy, finance, energy, education and technology.

The visiting Chinese president praised the rapid development of China-Costa Rica relations on November 17 and promised to make an effort to increase bilateral cooperation in several areas.

The two countries have made an effort to push long term development of solid and stable bilateral relations and cooperation, Hu said.
"China is ready to work with Costa Rica to create a bright future for bilateral relations characterized by mutual respect, equality, mutual benefit, cooperation and sincere friendship for generations to come," he added.

China is Costa Rica's second largest trading partner. In 2007, bilateral trade reached $2.8 billion, an increase of 33% over the previous year.

Costa Rica - China FTA moves ahead

This week the program for informing business owners and other private organizations about the future of the FTA begins as a part of the preliminary stage before starting the negotiations.

According to terra.com "To this end, the technical team will analyze the characteristics of the China - Peru and China - Chile FTAs during a seminar that will be held this Wednesday in San Jose, and which will be attended by business owners and leaders from the private sector, the Nacion daily reported."

Chilean experts are giving support to Costa Rican authorities to prepare for the FTA that the Government plans to begin negotiating with China in less than six months.

During the visit of Chilean president, Michelle Bachelet, cooperation mechanism in place were reaffirmed, such as support for trade negotiations, said the Costa Rica minister of Foreign Trade, Marco Vinicio Ruiz.

China plans to use Costa Rica as the bridge to export to the other countries with which the Central American country has trade agreements, such as Mexico, the United States and Canada.

In this round both parties expect to close a number of chapters, including national treatment, food health measures, intellectual property and cooperation.

Fernando Ocampo, Costa Rica's chief negotiator, explained that they have already agreed on 90% of the Free Trade Agreement regulation.
