Beer in Central America: Purchases Recover

After in May 2020, in the context of the pandemic caused by covid-19, regional beer imports fell to a historic low of $4 million, in the following months a recovery was evidenced and in September the figure rose to $23 million.

Guatemalan Companies, Main Buyers
In the first nine months of 2020 the main importer of beer in Central America continued to be Guatemala, with $46 million, followed by Honduras, with $30 million, Panama, with $29 million, Costa Rica, with $16 million, El Salvador, with $11 million and Nicaragua, with $2 million.

For the period in question, Costa Rica was the only market in which imports increased, reporting a 54% year-on-year variation.

In the cases of Honduras, El Salvador and Panama, the drops were 20%, 23% and 26%, respectively. Guatemala reduced its foreign purchases by 31% and Nicaragua's imports decreased by 32%.

Regional Business Down
For the period from January to September 2020, the value of beer imports in Central America fell 22% year-on-year, from $170 million in 2019 to $133 million in 2019.

In the first nine months of 2020, regional purchases from Mexico declined by 24% and from the U.S. by 7%.

Main Sellers
As of September 2020, 45% of the value purchased by Central America came from Mexico, 37% from the U.S., 3% from Belgium, 2% from Spain, 1% from the Netherlands, 1% from Germany and 1% from Portugal.

Mexico is the market of origin of imports that has grown the most for the months in question in recent years, since in 2013 it represented 24% of total purchases and in 2020 it grew to 45%.

Beer in Central America: Purchases Up 32%

March 2020

From January to September 2019, foreign purchases of beer in Central America amounted to $170 million, 32% more than reported in the same period in 2018, with Guatemala and El Salvador being the markets that registered the most significant increases in their imports.
