The interannual variation of the Central American Economic Activity Index (IAEC) in August was 3.40%, which is less than the 3.71% registered in the same month of the previous year. 

When analyzing the interannual variation in August of the last five years, it can be seen that the highest rate was registered in 2015, with 4.28%, and the lowest was in 2014, with 3.04%.

In August, Honduras was the country with the highest year-on-year growth in its economic activity, reaching a variation of 6.40%, followed by Panama with 4.9%, Nicaragua with 4.85%, El Salvador with 3.62%, Costa Rica with 2.85% and Guatemala with 2.36%.

After seven months of reporting drops in production levels, which were caused by the crisis generated by the covid-19 outbreak, during October the Monthly Index of Economic Activity registered a 1.3% year-on-year variation.

The health emergency led to a severe economic crisis, which began to become evident in March, when the Monthly Index of Economic Activity (IMAE) fell 5% year-on-year.

Costa Rica: Less Growth in Economic Activity

October 2017

The lower growth registered in the IMAE in August was mainly due to the performance of construction activity, which fell by 13% year-on-year.

From a report by the Central Bank of Costa Rica:

The cycle trend series of the Monthly Index of Economic Activity (IMAE) presented a year-on-year variation of 3.2% in August 2017, lower by 0.5 percentage points (pp) than the amount in the same period of the previous year; for its part average growth to August 2017 was 3.9%. [GRAFICA caption = "Click to interact with graphics"]
