Central America: Imports of Tires Down 6%

In 2016 imports of new pneumatic tires totaled $441 million, 6% less than in 2015, highlighting a large increase in China's share in the Central American market.

Variation of regional imports 
Between 2015 and 2016, the total value of new pneumatic tires imported into Central America fell by 6%, going from $470 million in 2015 to $441 million in 2016.

However, the value of imports from China registered a considerable increase, going from $144 million imported in 2012 to $216 million in 2016.

Imports by country 
In 2016 the main importer of new pneumatic tires in Central America was Guatemala with $130 million, followed by Costa Rica with $83 million, Panama with $71 million, Honduras with $63 million, Nicaragua with $58 million and El Salvador with $34 million.

Origin of imports 
In 2016, 49% of the value imported from Central America came from China, 6% from Brazil, 6% from Japan, 5% from the United States. And 5% from South Korea.

Behavior of regional imports 
Between January 2012 and December 2016, the month that registered the highest monthly import value was August 2016, when the region as a whole bought $45 million worth, while the month with the lowest data was February 2014, with $31 million.

In Guatemala the total import value of new tires fell from $132 million in 2015 to $130 million in 2016, and within that total, imports from China grew by 10%.
