Cement: Regional Purchases up 21%

During the first half of 2019, Central American companies imported $93 million in hydraulic cement, 21% more than in the same period in 2018.

Imports by Country

In the first half of 2019, the main importer of hydraulic cements in Central America was Guatemala, with $30 million, followed by Nicaragua, with $22 million, El Salvador, with $13 million, Honduras, with $12 million, Panama, with $9 million and Costa Rica, with $8 million.

Variation in Regional Imports
Between the first half of 2018 and the same period in 2019, the value imported into the region grew by 21%, increasing from $77 million to $93 million.

Regional purchases made from Vietnam show a considerable increase for the years in question, as imports increased by 131% from $8.2 million to $18.9 million.

Origin of Imports
From January to June, 20% of the value purchased came from Vietnam, 9% from Turkey, 8% from Peru, 8% from Mexico and 6% from Spain.

Vietnam is the market of origin of the imports that has grown the most for the period in question of the last eight years, given that in 2012 no significant purchases were reported and in 2019 it accounted for 20% of the total imported by the region.

During the first quarter of 2019, Central American companies imported hydraulic cement for $47 million, and purchases from companies in Vietnam increased 155% over the same period in 2018.

More Chinese Cement in Central America

During the first six months of 2018, Central American companies imported hydraulic cement for $77 million, and purchases from China increased 42% over the same period in 2017.
