The budget approved by the Assembly for next year includes specific items requested by the Canal Authority (ACP), which project several investments to improve the performance of the interoceanic highway.
In addition to "... funds for the replacement of the floating Titan crane, the increase of the tugboat fleet and the construction of a second dump for the optimal management of the reservoirs ...", the budget also includes an allocation for acquiring a floating dock for boat maintenance.
Regarding the advantages of buying a dock with these characteristics, Prensa.com reports that the ACP's chief, Jorge Luis Quijano, explained that "... this way you can take the equipment to the Atlantic or Pacific side to do the boat maintenance. With this dry dock, which can only be passed through the new locks, you can do maintenance on the dredges and the floating crane that will be purchased."
The activity had gained momentum through the concession of a port in Corazal, but is losing it in the legislative halls of the National Assembly.
The old merchant´s saying is apt for illustrating the risk that Panama is taking by losing position in terms of regional competition in the logistics area.
The Panama Canal Authority plans to tender a logistics park and port for ships transporting vehicles and machinery, as well as a study for a logistics annex to the new Pacific locks.
It is expected that the proposals will be taken to the Board of Directors of the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) in the first six months of the year for approval.
The area near the entrance of the Canal where land was recently sold to develop a resort could also host port logistics parks.
According to analysis by the Interamerican Development Bank (IDB) and the Canal Authority of Panama (ACP) the location of Punta Batele in the Pacific entrance of the canal, is ideal for port and logistics activities, taking advantage of its mixed inner city zoning generating increased revenue.
The Canal expansion will need a dry dock and pier annex in order to accommodate the large Post-Panamax vessels in transit.
The dam should be built at the mouth of the Canal over the Atlantic, since in their usual routes, "A large percentage of vessels arriving at this end of the Canal are empty or in ballast, and they usually already have complied with their cargo contracts.
