Canada New Market for Panamanian Melon and Watermelon

Producers in Azuero are sending their first two containers to Canada.

Compañía Exportadora Agrícola sold 15 containers for this season. Company North American will negotiate the products in the Canadian market.

Prensa.com reports in their article, "Melon will be sold at $ 15 in the Canadian market. Watermelon is sold to consumers at 40 cents a pound or so, depending on the offer, according to the Gremial de Agroexportadores de Productos No Tradicionales de Panamá."

Panama: Exports of Melon, Watermelon and Pumpkin Up 13%

25 thousand tons of cucurbits were sold in Europe, the United States and Canada in the 2013-2014 agricultural season.

The price for a box of melons in presentation of 24 pounds was $13, a box of watermelon weighing 37 pounds cost $16, while a sack of pumpkins weighing 45 pounds was sold in international markets at $12.

XX Congress of Melon and Watermelon Producers and Exporters

Panama is home to the XX International Congress of Producers and Exporters of Melon and Watermelons in Central America which brings together companies and exporters.

Organized by the Group of Non-Traditional Exporters of Panama (Gantrap) it will end on Saturday August 18 with business negotiation rounds between exporters, producers, importers and service providers.

Honduras Expects Record Melon Exports

The export target for the 2011-2012 crop is $60 million, 14% higher than the $52.7 million harvested in 2010-2011.

Total exports in the last harvest were 281.4 million kilos, at an average price of $0.19 per kilo.

The growing demand for the cantaloupe variety in U.S. and Canadian markets, has encouraged the industry to increase planting.

Honduras: Melons and Watermelons Access Mexico

February 2011

The Ministry of Agriculture announced that the country is now certified to export melons to the Mexican market.

The vice minister of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG), Juan Angel Artica, added that now there are new opportunities for producers in Honduras.

"The Mexican market will help because there is a surplus of about 400 metric tons to which some companies had not found a destination for,” reports Elheraldo.hn.
