Footwear: Purchases in the Region Are Recovering

For the third quarter of 2021, an increase in Central American purchases of footwear and its parts is observed, reaching imports of $445 million in the period analyzed, with China being the main supplier with $168 million.

Regional Business Recovers
Between the third quarter of 2020 and 2021 the imported value of footwear and its parts in Central America registered a 40% growth, going from $271 million to $445 million.

For the periods in question, imports from China and the U.S. increased by 58% and 26%, respectively.

Guatemalan Companies, Main Buyers
As of the third quarter of 2021, the main importer in the region was Guatemala with $125 million, followed by Panama with $90 million, Costa Rica with $80 million, El Salvador with $66 million, Honduras with $50 million and Nicaragua with $34 million.

During the third quarter of 2021 all Central American markets increased their purchases. In Nicaragua imports increased 50% year-on-year, in Guatemala and El Salvador 80%, in Costa Rica 41%, in Honduras 66% and in Panama 61%.

China, Main Supplier to the Region
by the third quarter of 2021, 38% of the value imported from Central America came from China, 15% from Zona Franca Panama, 10% from Panama and 6% from the USA.

In recent years China is the market of origin of purchases that has grown the most, rising from 29% in 2012 to 38% in the third quarter of 2021.

For the third quarter of 2021 imports of soaps and cleaning products in the Central American region increased by 45% reaching $128 million in purchases, the main supplier is Honduras with $79 million.

Shrimp: Honduras, Main Seller in the Region

For the third quarter of 2021, sales of frozen shrimp and prawns in Central America showed a slight increase in the region, reaching $241 million in exports, of which Honduras is the largest supplier with $188 million at $7.72 per ton.
