Water Heaters: Business with China is Gaining Presence

In recent years Chinese water heaters have gained importance in terms of the amount purchased, since from January to September 2012 they represented 12% of total Central American imports and for the same period of 2020 the proportion rose to 18%.

Costa Rica, Main Buyer
In the first nine months of 2020 the main importer of water heaters in Central America was Costa Rica with $4.7 million, followed by Guatemala, with $4.4 million, Panama, with $1.2 million, El Salvador with $900 thousand, Honduras with $700 thousand and Nicaragua with $500 thousand.

From January to September 2020, Nicaraguan imports increased 23% in year on year terms and Costa Rican imports increased 2%.

Purchases by Salvadoran companies decreased by 13%, Guatemalan ones by 14%, Honduran ones by 46% and Panamanian ones by 49%.

Variation in Regional Imports
Between January-September 2019 and the same period in 2020, imports declined from $15 million to $12 million.

Unlike purchases overall, for the periods in question imports from Germany increased 2% and purchases from China decreased 21%.

More Brazilian Water Heaters in Central America
From January to September last year, 32% of the value imported from Central America came from Brazil, 28% from the USA, 18% from China, 6% from Germany, 4% from Mexico and 2% from Thailand.

For the period in question in recent years, China is one of the markets of origin of purchases that has increased its presence in Central America, rising from 12% in 2012 to 18% in 2020.

Note: The report includes imports of electric, immersion, instantaneous gas and other types of water heaters.

Water Heaters: More Business with Mexico

In the first nine months of 2019, Central America imported water heaters for $15 million, and purchases from companies in Mexico increased 71% over the same period in 2018.
