CA Dairy Farmers Call to Protect the Sector

Representatives of producers agreed to ask their governments to exclude dairy products from FTA negotiations with Mexico and Peru.

The executive director of the Salvadoran Association of Livestock and Industry, Lorena Heredia, said the resolution adopted by the Central American Federation of Dairy Products seeks to protect the Central American dairy industry.

Heredia told Elsalvador.com, "... that Mexico and Peru could displace original products or other similar products ... and that the already materialized agreement with the EU is sufficient enough competition for them ...”.

The economy ministers of Central American will evaluate a possible Free Trade Agreement with Peru during the second half of 2010.

Héctor Dada Hirezi, Salvadoran Economy Minister, explained that Peru has expressed its interest in implementing a trade agreement with Central America.

Within negotiations framework on a possible FTA with Peru, the Industry Chamber of Costa Rica (ICRC) said the new trade agreements should be coupled with the strengthening of administration and promotion mechanisms in order to create potential opportunities for the industrial sector of Costa Rica.

Marco Meneses, President of the ICRC, stated the union´s position with respect to the round of FTA negotiations with the South American country, which are currently taking place in Panama, in a letter delivered to the Minister for Foreign Trade, Anabel Gonzalez, exhibited concern over the choice of partners enabling positive and mutually beneficial trading.

Central America Completes Third Round of FTA with Peru

At the end of the round chapters were closed on Sanitary and Health Certifications, Investment, Services and Customs Procedures.

Subjects discussed were policy issues related to market access for goods, rules of origin, customs procedures, customs cooperation, sanitary and health certifications, investment, services, temporary visas for businessmen, intellectual property and government purchases.

Central America Begins Negotiating FTA with Peru

November 2010

The first round of FTA negotiations between Peru and the region began on Monday in the Peruvian capital.

Negotiation teams from Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Panama and Peru are participating. Guatemala and Nicaragua have decided not to join current negotiations, but an accession clause will be included in case they want to join later.
