Bureaucracy Threatens Tourism

The Deputy Minister of Transport of El Salvador has delayed for up to eight months permits for tourist transport vehicles.

Monday, June 25, 2012

Tour Operators meeting in the Salvadoran Chamber of Tourism (CASATUR), denounced the delay in the delivery of operation permits by the Vice Ministry of Transportation (VMT) and harassment by the Transit Police. Bureaucracy at the Vice Ministry has created delays of up to eight months in the granting of permits which has caused forfeiture of vehicles by the Police.

Commenting on the topic, Alberto Ascencio Calderon, president of the Salvadoran Association of Hotels, added, "The situation has gone so far that even the vehicles making airport transfers to the different hotels in the city have been stopped by the police and customers have been taken out of the cars. "

For his part, Deputy Director of Traffic Police Cesar Flores Murillo told Elsalvador.com that "if a person is not authorized to transport people in a commercial function, they can not do so, they will face a penalty, whether is public transportion, for staff, tourists, buses, or taxis. Unfortunately, the law stipulates a penalty. "

The representative of the Salvadoran Association of Tour Operators (Asotur), Francisco Garcia added that the sector is not opposed to having to obtain permits but does require that procedures be more agile and that the cost of tourist transportation vehicles being paralyzed is too high.
