Sugar: Export Quota to United Kingdom

By signing the Association Agreement with the European country, Central America achieved an export quota of 56 thousand metric tons of sugar free of tariffs.

Days ago it was reported that the association agreement signed guarantees Central American countries that with the departure of the United Kingdom from the European Union, there will not be a legal vacuum that interrupts trade relations with that country, while maintaining tariff preferences and legal guarantees for companies exporting to the United Kingdom.

Directors of the Sugar Association of El Salvador specified that the economic authorities of the Central American countries will be in charge of negotiating the distribution of the sugar export quota that was granted by the United Kingdom.

Mario Salaverría, president of the Sugar Growers Guild, told Laprensagrafica.com that "... The only way to export at preferential prices is under trade agreements. Let's remember that sugar is a well-regulated market in the world and the quotas for us are very important."

According to the "Crop Monitoring" compiled by CentralAmericaData, during 2018 the United Kingdom was the seventh most important destination market for regional sugar exports, with about 76 thousand tons.
