Tourist Spending in Panama Up 10%

Although the rate of increase of Panamanian tourism dropped to 3.7%, the level of what each visitor spends during their stay has risen sharply.

During the first seven months of 2013 the country received 1.3 million tourists, who spent a total of $1.43 billion, up 10.4% compared to the same period in 2012.

In the same period the previous year $1.301 billion in tourist spending was reported, in other words this year $136 million more was received. Data from the Tourism Authority of Panama (ATP) shows that in July alone 163,353 tourists entered the country.

The majority of visitors entered through Tocumen International Airport (890,605 people) where activity increased by 2.1%, followed by 3.1% at Paso Canoas and cruise ports with 3.1%.

Panamaamerica.com.pa reports: "However, in the period from January to July 2013, hotels in Panama City showed overall occupancy of 58.5%, showing a decrease of 2% compared to 2012. Regarding this, the ATP reported that the reductions are due to the increased hotel supply that exists in the country. "

In the first nine months of the year an increase of 13.9% was reported in daily spending compared to the same period in 2010.

During the aforementioned period, spending by visitors amounted to $1,397 million, $170 million more than in 2010.

In the first half of the year tourists arrivals to the country nearly doubled compared to the same period in 2010.

Expenditure by the approximately 1.2 million visitors was $908.8 million, a 10.3% increase compared to last year.
