Alvaro Mayorga is the President of the Guatemalan Chamber of Construction. From his point of view, the increase is a result of road maintenance and several re coating projects undertaken in Guatemala city.

"In the first half of 2009, asphalt was used to repair 500 kilometers of road, according to data from Covial", reported website Prensalibre.com.

Compañía Guatemalteca de Níquel, S.A. and Minera San Rafael S.A have been granted permission to undertake controlled mining activities in two sectors of the country.

This morning (yesterday) authorities at the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM) reported the granting of two mining licenses, identified as SEXT-015-11 "ESCOBAL" to company "MINERA SAN RAFAEL, SA" and SEXT-019-11 "Proyecto de Explotación Minero Niquegua MONTÚFAR II" for company "Compañía Guatemalteca de Níquel, S.A.".

Guatemala: $43 Million in Road Infrastructure

60 kilometers will be added to the Inter-departamental ring road, linking CA-9 North highway with CA-1.

Works should take 24 months, and will be paid with funds from Covial (Road Conservation Fund), explained Bryon Paiz, communications vice minister.

“Álvaro Mayorga, president of the Guatemalan Chamber of Construction (CGC), commented that this project will create jobs and provide opportunities for construction companies, which have been hardly hit by the crisis”, reported Prensalibre.com.

Expocasa 2009 Begins in Guatemala

The first ever edition of the trade fair, Expocasa 2009, opened today with the participation of 22 real estate developers.

Organized by the Guatemalan Chamber of Construction (CGC), the fair is being held in the Parque de la Industria until Sunday, June 21st.

Guatemala: Construction Down by 69%

In the first quarter, the municipality of the capital city approved the construction of 243,010 square meters, 69.15% less than during the same period in 2008.

According to a report by the Congressional Committee on the Economy, there were 787,777 meters approved during the first four months of 2008.
