Rice: Purchases from the U.S. Up

For the third quarter of 2021, rice imports made by Central America showed a decrease of 31%, however, the main supplier of the region was the United States of America with $139 million, which represents 68% of the purchases made from Central America.

Nicaragua, Main Buyer
During the third quarter of 2021 the top importer of rice in Central America was Nicaragua with $49 million, followed by Costa Rica with $46 million, Honduras with $40 million, Guatemala with $33 million, El Salvador with $23 million and Panama with $15 million.

In relation to the year-on-year variation of purchases, only Nicaragua recorded an increase of 35%. For the third quarter, the other countries recorded a decrease in their imports, Costa Rica 26%, Honduras 20%, Panama 75%, El Salvador 37% and Guatemala 41%.

Regional Business downward
Between the third quarter of 2020 and 2021, the value of rice imports in the region decreased by 31%, from $298 million to $205 million.

For the quarters under analysis, purchases from U.S. companies increased by 30.17%.

U.S. Main Supplier
During the third quarter of 2021, 68% of the value imported from Central America came from the U.S., followed by Brazil with 18%, Costa Rica with 3% and Uruguay with 2%.

In recent years, Costa Rica is one of the markets of origin of imports that have grown the most, since in 2012 regional purchases from the South American country represented 0.67% of total purchases and in the third quarter of 2021 the proportion rose to 3.1%.
