Alterra drops legal suit over Costa Rica airport contract

Alterra, the company that operates Costa Rica's Juan Santamaría airport, said it would drop its legal claim against the authorities as part of a package that would transfer its responsibilities to a consortium headed by Houston Airport System (HAS).

Jeffery Scheferman, president of the HAS Development Corporation, said that the case would be closed for his company too.
Alterra had sued the Civil Aviation Technical council (Cetac) for unspecified damages for alleged break of its contract as operator of the airport.

The US consortium has the backing of the Comptroller General of the Republic to operate and expand Juan Santamaría airport.

The current manager, Alterra Partners, has been without the funds to undertake the expansion for a year and it has agreed to cede its rights to Houston Airport System (HAS).

Costa Rica concessions Liberia airport to Houston Airport

Houston Airport, the administrator of the Juan Santamaria airport, was granted the concession for the expansion of the Liberia airport.

The expansion project for the Daniel Oduber airport in Liberia, Guanacaste, will require an initial investment of $35 million to construct an area of 22949 square meters and will concessioned for 20 years, indicated Karla Gonzalez, Minister of Public Works and Transport.

Regional bank to back Costa Rica airport plan

The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (BCIE) is to finance the modernization of Costa Rica's Juan Santamaría airport.

BCIE is backing the consortium that aims to take over the airport's operations from Alterra. The consortium, led by Houston Airport System (HAS) has yet to make a formal offer for Alterra, a Bechtel unit.

Bidders from Argentina, Colombia and the U.S. vie to operate Costa Rican airport

Companies from Argentina, Colombia and the United States are exploring the possibility of operating the Juan Santamaría Airport, Costa Rica's largest. The government accuses the current operator of failing to fulfill its contractual obligations.

The bidders are Grupo América, of Aeropuertos Argentina 2000; Grupo Odinsa of Colombia; and Houston Airports of the U.S.
