Pet Food: What Happens in the Markets?

From January to March 2020, companies in the region imported $52 million in dog and cat food, 11% more than what was reported for the same period in 2019, which is explained by the increase in purchases in the markets of Costa Rica and El Salvador.

Panama and Costa Rica: Main Buyers in the Region
During the first three months of last year, the main importer of dog and cat food conditioned for retail sale in Central America was Panama, with $24 million, followed by Costa Rica, with $21 million, Guatemala, with $16 million, El Salvador, with $15 million, Honduras, with $12 million, and Nicaragua, with $11 million.

Variations in the Central American Business
Between January and March 2018 and the same period in 2019, the volume imported for dog and cat food preparations registered a 10% increase, going from 45 thousand tons to 50 thousand tons. In the case of the imported value, it grew from $47 million to $52 million.

The increase in imports is mainly explained by the increase in purchases registered in Costa Rica and El Salvador, markets in which variations of 38% and 15%, respectively, were reported.
 
U.S. main supplier
During the first three months of last year, 27% of the value imported from Central America came from the USA, 23% from Mexico, 1% from France and 1% from Colombia.

Mexico is the market of origin of the imports that has grown the most for the months in question of the last eight years, since in 2012 it represented 18% of the total purchases of Central America, and in 2019 that proportion rose to 21%.
