Agro: Poorly Credible Outlook for Nicaragua

The Nicaraguan government projects for the 2019-2020 agricultural cycle the planting of 1.5 million hectares of land, 3% more than in the previous period, a very unbelievable forecast for businessmen.

The 2019-2020 Production, Consumption and Commerce Plan, which was prepared by the government without the support of the private sector, explains that it is projected to plant 1.5 million hectares and harvest 1.4 million hectares, which would represent a 3.1% increase compared to the previous cycle.

For the business sector these forecasts are over-optimistic. Alvaro Vargas, vice president of the Union of Agricultural Producers of Nicaragua, explained to Elnuevodiario.com.ni that "... Plan 2019-2020 is not very credible.  According to a survey made by the organization, products such as peanuts and coffee will experience a decrease in planting areas.

For Vargas, there are several inconsistencies, for example, the official plan estimates that for the 2019-2020 cycle 68,000 hectares of peanuts will be planted, but businessmen forecast 53,000 hectares.

Mario Arana, president of AmCham, said that "... the government is immersed in a kind of denial of the reality of the crisis in Nicaragua. Although tax revenues are improving because of the fiscal reform, that behavior is not stable."

Basic Grains: Fall in 2019-2020 Harvest Expected

November 2019

In El Salvador, it is projected that in the current agricultural cycle, the corn and bean harvests will fall by 5% and 8%, respectively, compared to what was predicted at the time of planting.

The forecasts of the Chamber of Small and Medium Agricultural Producers (CAMPO) and the National Association of Rural Producers of El Salvador (ANPRES), specify that in the case of corn there are about 20,000 manzanas of crop damaged, which would imply a loss of investment of approximately $19 million.

Nicaragua's fishing and aquaculture production in 2019 will be close to 175 million pounds, 6% less than production in 2018.

In the Production, Consumption and Trade Plan for the 2019-2020 cycle, the government expects a 6.4% year-on-year decline, mainly because of the implementation of management and sustainability measures for sea cucumbers, such as the closure of two additional months for all species and the permanent closure for cucumber, Café y Carajo, explains the document.

Optimistic Perspectives for Agriculture in Nicaragua

June 2017

The agricultural and livestock guild plans to close the 2017/18 cycle with growth close to 5.5%, which is due to better yields and a rebound in international prices of the main export products.

Companies in the agricultural sector expect better results to be achieved in the next agricultural cycle than in the previous one, which was affected, among other things, by the low international prices of products such as sugar cane, sorghum and peanuts.  For the 2017/2018 cycle, better prices are expected in the international market along with growth in production.

Nicaragua: Optimism in the Rice Sector

The union estimates that agricultural production cycle 2016-17 will be 5.5 million hundredweight, exceeding the 4.1 million hundredweight produced in the previous harvest.

The Union of Agricultural Producers of Nicaragua (UPANIC) based its forecast on the 68,000 acres of land to be cultivated during the different sub-cycles of production in the 2016/17 cycle.
