African Palm in Honduras

The sector’s plans to expand the amount of cultivated area in the country, which could make Honduras the largest producer of palm oil in Latin America.

Hector Casto, president of palm manufacturers, said that they have the ability to increase production by half a million hectares which would locate Honduras in the first place of all the Latin America producers.

"He explained that in Colombia, which occupies the first place, there are 600.000 planted hectares and around 400.000 hectares in Ecuador. Honduras currently has 150.000 hectares, if it could add another 500,000 it would become the leading producer and exporter", reported Proceso.hn.

According to Victor Iscoa, technical secretary of the palm chain at the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG), this year exports of the product have grown by 30%, going from $304.4 million to more than $400 million.

African palm producers plan to increase by 10% the area under cultivation, mainly in the northern and Atlantic zone of the country.

The intention is to compete with the big Central American producers such as Ecuador and Colombia, who have about 400,000 and 600,000 hectares respectively.

With a production growth of 50% over the last five years, Honduras recorded $110 million in exports in the first six months of 2012.

From 89,000 hectares in 2006, the size of the area planted with oil palm in Honduras has grown to reach 132,000 in 2011, making the country the third largest producer in Latin America.
