The approved agreements in maritime and air transport provide the basis for establishing direct air routes and will allow vessels flying the Panamanian flag to receive preferential treatment in Chinese ports.

Panamanian authorities ratified the transport agreements with the Asian country, which includes the civil air transport agreement, through which both countries laid the foundations to establish direct routes, opening space to establish commercial or cargo flights between both countries.

Wednesday, January 31, 2018At its meeting on Tuesday, the Cabinet Council approved agreements signed between the Government of the Republic of Panama and the People's Republic of China, which were the product of the official visit of President Juan Carlos Varela to this eastern nation in November 2017.
The agreements that received the approval of the Executive were those related to Civil Air Transport and Maritime Transport.
One of those agreements signed by President Varela and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, relates to the maritime sector, where Panama was granted the status of Most Favored Nation, which will allow further strengthening of the registry of ships in the country.

China Ocean Shipping Company began operating the new maritime service that will connect Port Moin, in the province of Limon, with Shanghai, in China.
The service began operating last September 22, when the ship of the Chinese government's shipping company arrived at the Moin Container Terminal, and left on September 23 after loading products such as pineapple, banana, meat and orange juice.
Vessels sailing under the Panamanian flag will receive benefits in port tariffs and preferential treatment in ports in the People's Republic of China.

Panama reaffirms its leadership in merchant marine matters by receiving the status of "Most Favored Nation", with which vessels under their registry will receive benefits in port tariffs and preferential treatment in ports in the People's Republic of China.
New DHL trade routes include: from Qingdao, China to Santos, Brazil; from Le Havre, France to Veracruz, Mexico; from Miami, USA. to Colon, Panama; and from Hong Kong, China to Managua, Nicaragua.

DHL Global Forwarding, the specialist in air and maritime transport which is part of Deutsche Post DHL, has announced the launch of four new direct routes for shipments of consolidated loads (LCL) to countries throughout Latin America. The new trade routes include: from Qingdao, China to Santos, Brazil; from Le Havre, France to Veracruz, Mexico; from Miami, USA. to Colon, Panama; and from Hong Kong, China to Managua, Nicaragua. With the opening of these new routes for LCL in the months of May and June, DHL customers have benefited from shorter transit, better rates and lowering of their carbon footprint.
At the Office of International Trade Negotiations at the Ministry of Commerce the negative impact that it would have on the country's maritime activity has been noted.
The law has been harshly criticized by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (Mici), who also considered that the agreements violate promotion and protection of investments and trade agreements signed by Panama.
