Economic Activity Remains in Red Numbers

In the second month of 2019, the IMAE in Nicaragua registered a 7% decrease with respect to February 2018, mainly because of the performance of the Hotels and Restaurants, and Fisheries and Aquaculture sectors.

The original IMAE series showed a 7.5% decrease compared to February 2018, a 6.6% decrease in the January-February period and a 5.3% annual average, reported the Central Bank of Nicaragua in its report.

The report states that "... On the other hand, the activities with the greatest growth were: energy and water, 10.8 percent; agriculture, 7.0 percent; forestry and wood extraction, 3.3 percent; health, 2.6 percent; and education, 2.3 percent.

The growth of these activities was offset by decreases in hotel and restaurant production, 24.7 percent; fishing and aquaculture, 22.5 percent; financial intermediation, 21.1 percent; construction, 18.7 percent; and trade, 16.3 percent, among others.

In primary activities, growth in agriculture, forestry and livestock was offset by decreases in fishing and aquaculture, and mining and quarrying

Nicaraguan Economic Activity Drops 7%

At the end of 2018, the Monthly Index of Economic Activity fell by 7% compared to December 2017, a decrease explained by the performance of the Hotels and Restaurants and Construction sectors.

In December, the seasonally adjusted monthly index of economic activity (IMAE) decreased 0.2% with respect to November 2018.

Nicaragua: Economic Activity Still Weakening

Up to October 2018, the economic activity index fell 6% with respect to the same month in 2017, mainly because of the performance in the commerce, hotels and restaurants sectors.

The Central Bank of Nicaragua reported that "... In October, the monthly economic activity index (IMAE) decreased 6.0 percent compared to October 2017.

Nicaragua: Economic Activity Up 4.4%

September 2017

For the second consecutive month, the monthly economic activity index registered a year-on-year increase of 4.4%, this time driven by construction and hotels and restaurants.

From a report by the Central Bank of Nicaragua:

In July, the monthly index of economic activity (IMAE) showed growth of 4.4 percent compared to July 2016.  The average annual variation was 4.8 percent and cumulative growth for the January-July period reflected an increase of 5.4 percent.  [GRAFICA caption = "Click to interact with graphics"]

The sectors that accounted for most of the year-on-year increase were Livestock, with an increase of 17%, and Forestry and Wood Extraction, with an increase of 14%.
