Petroleum Oils: Purchases up 25%

In the first nine months of 2018, countries in the region imported petroleum oils for $7,598 million, 25% more than in the same period in 2017, a rise explained by purchases from the U.S.

Guatemalan Companies, Main Buyers
From January to September 2018, the main buyer of petroleum oils and bituminous minerals in Central America remained Guatemala, with $1.891 million, followed by Panama, with $1.678 million, Costa Rica, with $1.195 million, Honduras with $1.137 million, El Salvador, with $941 million and Nicaragua with $756 million.

Regional Business Upwards
Between the first nine months of 2017 and the same period in 2018, imported value increased 25% from $6.077 million to $7.598 million. This is the second consecutive year in which positive year-on-year variations are reported from January to September.

For the periods concerned, purchases from U.S. companies have grown by 24%, from $4,516 million to $5,601 million.

U.S. Companies, Main Suppliers
From January to September, 74% of the value purchased by Central America was from the U.S., 16% from the Panama Free Zone, 2% from Ecuador and 2% from Malaysia.

The U.S. is the market of origin of imports that has grown the most in the months concerned in the last seven years, since in 2012 represented 55% of total purchases and in 2018 grew to 74%.
