$8 Million in Medical Devices

The U.S. subsidiary of a Japanese manufacturer of devices for neurovascular interventions has announced it will open a plant in Costa Rica.

A press release states:

MicroVention, Inc., a leader in developing, manufacturing and marketing of devices for neurovascular interventions, announced today it will open its first plant outside the United States in the Free Zone Coyol of Alajuela in Costa Rica. From here, MicroVention will produce sophisticated platinum coils - medical devices used for embolization of cerebral aneurysms. The initial investment in facilities will be around $8 million.

"We are extremely excited about the opening of our first manufacturing plant in Costa Rica, and we hope to work with them to create a world class organization that will be an extension to our corporate facility in Tustin, California," said Rich Cappetta, President and CEO of MicroVention, Inc.

The new plant will cover 5000 m² and construction will start in July 2011. The estimated start of operations is September 2012. The company expects initially to hire over 100 people by this date, including skilled workers, engineers and administrative staff.

Microvention Terrumo, manufacturer of neuroendovascular devices, will be expanding its plant in Costa Rica, in order to increase the product lines and units that it exports from the country.

The new facilities are expected to start operating during the third quarter of this year.

Okay Industries has opened its 1,400 square meter plant in Costa Rica, investing over $1.5 million.

This specialist provider will be devoted to the manufacture of high precision metal components for the medical industry, such as:
- parts of surgical instruments.
- assembly line components for medical products.

Medical Device Companies Increase in Costa Rica

In the year 2000 there were only 8 such companies, the number has now reached 41, making this one of the most dynamic sectors in the country.

The recent announcement by the company MicroVention of the installation of a plant with an investment of $8 million comes shortly after those made in the first six months of the year by the companies Helix Medical and GW Plastics.
