$25 million for educational program in Guatemala

The United States announced the donation of the funds for an educational program for the 2009-2011 period, which will benefit thousand of families.

The American Embassy explained in a short release that the so called "International Feeding Program for Child Education and Nutrition" will be executed during the next three years by the private Share Guatemala Foundation. The program will be carried out in the departments of Chimaltenango (west), Huehuetenango (northwest) and Baja Verapaz (north), promote the attendance of children to school. The funds were donated by the US Department of Agriculture for 2009-2011.

The Millennium Funds Program (FOMILENIO), was started in El Salvador in September 12, 2007, with a total donation of $460.9 million, contributed by the United States Millennium Challenge Account (MCA).

United States to Resume Aid to Honduras

Hillary Clinton, U.S. State Secretary, announced that her country intends to reactivate economic aid to Honduras.

Laprensa.hn reported that “Clinton stated her interest in strengthening social programs in the country, those geared to the most vulnerable population”.

U.S. economic aid was suspended after the destitution of ex president Manuel Zelaya on June 28, 2009.

Honduras Hopes for Reactivation of Credit

After the political agreement, the country hopes to restore international loans and cooperation estimated at $739 million.

The financial blockage was imposed by the United States, the European Union and Venezuela, together with financial institutions such as IMF, WB, IDB and CABEI, after the political events of June 28th.

45 Projects Paralyzed by Political Crisis

$684 million in projects are on hold in Honduras, due to IDB and WB freezing financial cooperation with the country.

38 projects are awaiting $456.7 million in funding from the Inter-American Development Bank. Likewise, the World Bank has 17 active projects, with $227.4 million to be disbursed.

The Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala (USAC, University of San Carlos of Guatemala) was one of the earliest universities to be founded in the Americas. It was decreed a university on January 31, 1676 by royal command of King Charles II of Spain. It had previously been known as the Escuela de Santo Tomás (School of Saint Thomas), founded in 1562 by the priest Francisco Marroquín. The University finally gained international acceptance by Official Decree from Pope Innocent XI, on June 18, 1687.
