$130 million Food Purchase

The government of Guatemala has announced that due to a drought which is forecast for the remainder of the year, it will extend the program for Operation Opportunity and will spend $130 million on food.

This project aims to expand the food delivery program until November, since according to forecasts presented by the meteorological services of Guatemala and the United States, the drought period could last until August.

Germán González, head of the Department of Food and Nutritional Security (Sheshan), told Prensalibre.com that "... The Ministries of Health, Social Development and Agriculture are preparing actions to prevent acute malnutrition, including food acquisition to extend Operation Opportunity for more months. "

"... This year three deliveries of food will be made, from January to March, but there will be an extension until November. It is noteworthy that no negative effects are expected in southern Petén and the Northern Transversal Strip. "
