Walmart Accused of Monopolistic Practices

The Commission to Promote Competition has opened an investigation into the international company, which has been accused by pork producers in Costa Rica of setting the prices of pork cuts below the market price.

Friday, May 4, 2012

The Commission to Promote Competition (COPROCOM) agreed to initiate a preliminary investigation against the supermarket chain Wal-Mart for alleged monopolistic practices, reported Nacion.com.

The decision of the pro-competition entity is based on a complaint from the National Pork Producers Chamber to COPROCOM, filed on 29th February. Pork producers claim they have found an alleged drop in prices of pork cuts at levels below market rates.

The director of the COPROCOM, Victoria Velazquez, said that the Commission considers that more information is needed in order to start a possible process, and is therefore initiating an investigation.
